HOA Thought
So, I'm not a home-owner, but I had a random thought about Home Owners Assocations today. I was thinking that HOAs are a baby step to socialism. Okay, stay with me for a second. I promise I'm not normally a conspiracy theorist. But with today's political climate, socialism is on my mind a lot, and I just connected a few dots. HOAs have the power to tell you how short to keep your grass, when to mow your lawn, and even what colors you can or can't paint your house with! Why in the world shouldn't I be able to paint the color I want? Anyway, that's the end of my random ramblings.

K, I am going to dispute your claims, being a conspiracy believer and a home owner with in an HOA. It's true that HOA's do dictate to you some things you can and can't do with your property. The difference is you can choose to buy a house in an HOA or not. If you don't like the idea of people telling you what you can and can't do on your property, don't buy in an HOA. On the other hand, when a gov't does it, it's a lot harder to move to a different country so you don't really have a choice whether or not you want to be involved in whatever it is they decide to dictate at the moment. You can only hope to have decent elected officials that won't do that kind of thing (unfortunately, as you know, we aren't so lucky in the country anymore). I look at joining an HOA kind of like going to BYU and signing the Honor Code. A lot of people complain about the restrictions of the honor code, but you weren't forced to go to BYU where you knew you'd have to sign said honor code. You had the freedom to go to another school. Once you've signed up for the honor code though, you had better believe they have the right to enforce it since they are a private institution. HOA's are private as well. If you sign up for the terms you better believe they have the right to enforce them. You made a contract with them. Ok, I am done now. I actually like HOA's because they are a private institution. Those are becoming few and far between these days. Granted, I wouldn't sign up for any old HOA. We all have to be careful when we sign our name on any dotted line.
ReplyDeleteOh, I wasn't really being serious. I mean, I think there are some similarities, but I was mostly being goofy. My thoughts tend to be so serious these days, and I guess it was time to take those serious thoughts and turn them into something silly.
ReplyDeleteHaha, fair enough. I get a little too serious these days too. There's a lot of nasty stuff going on. But anyway, I can never turn down a good debate ;)
