(I didn't mean to delve into politics again as I have a couple of other posts in mind that need to go up. But I wrote this as a note in FB this morning and thought it worth passing along to those that don't FB. If you don't agree with the thoughts here and call to action, please just ignore it. I didn't write this as a way to start a debate or upset people. I just know I get frustrated feeling like there's nothing I can do about the changes in our country that I am vehemently opposed to, and I think there are others out there that feel the same. So I wanted to pass along an idea of something you can do.)
My feelings regarding AZ SB 1070 (the immigration bill) are a little mixed--I believe there is a better way--but ultimately I respect AZ stepping in and trying to protect its citizens. Immigration is supposed to be under federal jurisdiction, but when Phoenix has one of the highest kidnapping and crime rates in the country, ranchers are murdered, and policemen are shot at, something has to be done. The media and our nation's leadership have done an excellent job in twisting this bill into something it's not. There will be no raids on ice cream shops or anything of the sort. In fact, it is almost a copy of a federal law we already have that just isn't enforced!
One thing I have wondered is how I can support AZ when I don't live there. I can't really participate in their economy, and I certainly can't vote in their upcoming elections. And then, a talk radio host had a great idea of something the average person can do to try to combat the boycott on the state. Phoenix is currently being considered as the site of the 2012 Republican National Convention. I would urge you to e-mail the head of the RNC Micheal Steele and impress upon him the need to support AZ at this time and bring them the convention. It is past time that Republicans stood for something again, and this would be the perfect start.
Steele's e-mail address is: m.steele@rnchq.org. You are more than welcome to copy and paste the short message I sent him which was:
Dear Mr. Steele,
I believe you should choose Phoenix as the site of the 2012 Republican National Convention and that you should announce that decision immediately. Arizona is doing what our federal government won't: taking a firm stand against illegal immigration. It is time for Republicans to also take a stand and support this state's brave actions taken on behalf of its citizens.
Sincerely,
Amanda
