It's been awhile since I've posted anything political. I think I'm with the rest of the country and feeling a bit tired from it all. And a bit of defeat as well. But I read something posted by a friend on Facebook today that really has me needing to vent. I don't want to respond to her post directly because I learned the hard way it's best to stay out of politics on FB unless you know the person agrees with you. This blog, however, is my place to have my say. Plus, it's been FOREVER since I've posted anything, and I figure the topic of paddling in schools is as good as any to write about.
I heard yesterday that Temple, TX is now allowing paddling again. I'm not completely sure where I stand on the issue of paddling--I have some mixed feelings. (After the year I had last year, I lean towards being all for it. It was a long, hard year, and some of those kids wouldn't respond to any consequence I threw at them, be it positive or negative! But I'm feeling a little burned out and vulnerable to the "easy" answer.) But I was so excited to hear this because it is the embodiment of how I believe government should be run: as local as possible. The thing is, the whole reason this came to be was the parents wanted it. How beautiful is that? Now what I think would be even better was if parents could get vouchers to send their kids to another school (public, private or charter) if they disagree with the policy. Bring on choice! Bring on competition in the school system! Bring the issues back to the states, counties, and cities!

Good to hear from you again. It seems many blogs are dying these days, our included. All I can say in response to your post is amen, sister, amen. Bring back local control and choice.
ReplyDeleteI have difficulty in updating our blog not for lack of time but lack of substance. It seems like everyone else posts almost solely about their children. There's nothing wrong with that at all, but it leaves me wondering what to write about and if anyone would be interested when I do find something. I am excited because my in-laws are coming this weekend, so I hope to not only have subject matter but pics as well!

Hey Amanda! The whole point of a blog is it is a place to say whatever it is you want to say - sort of like a public journal - so don't worry about making excuses about it ever! I've enjoy looking through your blog - it's late so I haven't read every word, but it's cool to see what all you guys have been up to. Keep it up! :)
ReplyDeleteTwo things that can cause friendship are politics and religion. Both can get very heated and it can take a lot of self restraint/control to not get offended by what the other person says. I think it's great that you are willing to speak up for what you believe in. I wish I was more bold in that way and spoke my mind more often, but like you, I am afraid of offending someone. I hope you keep sharing your views!
