The Honesty of Children

First, the background: For anyone who isn't already aware, I have gained a little more weight than I am comfortable with and am working on it. Not as hard as I should, and every week I commit to doing better, but that's where it stands now. As a result of this, not all of my clothes fit as well as they should. When looking in my closet this morning, I realized I hadn't done laundry lately and the pickings were pretty slim. As a result, I had to wear a skirt and shirt that are not of an ideal fit, but were close enough that I thought I could get away with it.

So today I was asked to sub for the Sunbeam (4 year-olds) primary class in church. As I was walking around handing out papers to color on, one of those sweet little children asked me why my tummy was big. She then predictably asked me if it was because I had a baby. In my profession, I learned a long time not to take those kinds of things personally. I answered with, "No, I'm just fat," and laughed with them about it.

Maybe it's time to make a commitment to weight-loss and actually stick to it!

  1. I don't know what's worse, a kid asking you about your "big tummy" or a kid thinking you were a boy. Yup, that's right a boy! I was 18 and working at a children's clothing store. I had just gotten my hair cut really short. A mom told her little girl to give me something that had fallen off a shelf. "Go give the lady behind the counter that book." and she responded with, "That's not a lady mom, that's a boy!" Kids, gotta love em right?
