Something Besides Pictures

I just realized it's been a very, very long time since I've actually written something for the blog. I've been so excited to finally have pictures to share that I've been using my "blog time" for that instead. I still have a few slide shows to go before I'm done, but I had an airport adventure that I wanted to share in the meantime. A couple days ago, I left Texas with my mom to visit family and friends in Utah. We flew out of Houston with a layover in Denver and then on to SLC. This was all SUPPOSED to happen in one night.

Of course, Murphy's law has to rear it's ugly head every now and then to remind you of how little you actually can control in life. Texas has been in a very bad drought this summer, but the one time it decides to storm would be the day I'm supposed to fly. This meant our flight out of Houston was delayed, which in turn meant we missed the connecting flight to SLC. We were stuck in Denver.

Having watched the news when this kind of stuff happened in Dallas, I assumed all airports kept cots for such occasions. Boy, was I wrong! Even thought Denver is notorious for delays and cancellations in the winter, they do not have cots there. There wasn't really enough time to go to a hotel and come back for our newly-booked flight at 7 the next morning, so my mom and I slept in the airport.

The funniest part was we didn't sleep just anywhere in the airport. We were directed to the chapel, since it would be a little safer and quieter. The lights were all on there, and instead of pews (as we had hoped) they had chairs with armrests. So, not the best sleeping conditions. We did notice that next to the chapel was a room for worshippers of the Muslim faith. This room was dark with prayer rugs spread throughout. Slightly better for sleeping in. So we did. (Well, if you can call it sleep. I think I got 1 1/2 hours during the night.)

Embarrassingly enough, at about 12:30, a man came in for his prayers. There were 3 of us sleeping in there, and we just kind of looked at each other in that "What do we do?" way. So, we did what anyone would in that situation: nothing. We certainly didn't want to interrupt or distract him, so we tried to make ourselves invisible by sitting very, very still. Eventually, he left. He never did say anything to us, but I did feel really bad about disrupting his religious routine!
