A Win for Both Sides

My sister Mary recently sent me a copy of a newspaper article that I loved and wanted to share. The best part about it is that while it didn't come from the Victoria Advocate, it is about my hometown. It isn't often we make the news, so it was exciting to see our name in another paper. She sent it to me as a scanned document in my e-mail, and I'm not sure I can directly link that to this post or not. So, I'll just type it out. It isn't long. And I promise I haven't changed anything--it is word-for-word verbatim!

Victoria, TX is a town about 80 miles west of Houston. Local Hispanic leaders there, in opposition to pending Immigration Legislation, boycotted all Caucasian owned businesses as a demonstration of their economic impact on the community. The boycott was declared a success by the Hispanic community, noting revenue in Caucasian owned business was down 19 percent. Business owners declared the boycott a success as well, pointing out that shoplifting was down by 77 percent, money orders sent out of the country were down by 97 percent, and the daily cost of clean-up and trash collection was down by 84 percent. Shoppers reported that they could actually hear English being spoken throughout the community for the first time in recent memory, and customers paid for purchases with real money, not government debit cards or food stamps!

Honestly, I find quite a bit of this racist, especially the parts at the end that are very subjective. But this is seriously how Caucasians start to feel in areas with high levels of illegal immigrants. This has helped me add a new reason to be against illegal immigration: it breeds racism.

The overall point behind the article is interesting to me, though. Be careful when trying to prove your points, because you never know what skeletons could be found in the closets!
